Your brain knows there should be a lot more of it, subconsciously, but your aware mind doesn't and that's a big part of your problem. Once you start filling in empty spots with trees, especially large ones, things feel a lot less icky.īUT, if you're also the type of player who gets bored fast by the act of painstakingly plopping trees down, you tend to overfocus on the roads, and your brain is going "grids, grids, grids, arrrrrg!" Greenery. It makes everything in the game feel like a McMansion suburb that just got built. It's why it feels alive and realistic in a way that your CS build with its barren lots and stingy built in trees doesn't. Typical cities have more trees than you expect, and it's that canopy that tends to hide how much of a grid the typical city really is. So you started to get some of that "live" feel into the game.Įven without ParkLife it helps a LOT to really get into putting trees down. This lack is, I think, what drives people nuts, but unless you get into the game enough to start studying cities and their design, you're not sure WHAT is wrong, you just know it feels wrong.ĭLCs like Park Life helped a lot, because the nature of that park system allows you to turn just about any odd lot into a park, like the real world does. They're all at least somewhat unique even in rural areas where the schools get built in a vast green field with no urban constraints, they all still have a unique layout and character. There is generally no such thing as a Standard Elementary School building. If the space is small they might build up, or even down, they do a lot of things in the real world because the plot dictates the building, and it constantly forces fairly unique buildings to exist. They don't knock down adjacent buildings because their school plan is ten meters too wide. If they want to build a school they look at the space they have for the school, and build it to fit. Such pressures have created nearly every building that finds itself on Top 10 Interesting Architecture lists. Unlike many interesting buildings in many interesting cities, there is no mechanic for, say, an interesting triangular building to generate in the triangular piece of real estate that is available. The game is essentially set up to build grids.
